“Rituals” When Writing Wolf Books

Thanks so much for having me! My wolves loved the pot roast you had for them and they just wanted you to know, they’re always game for more!

Speaking of games, they love playing them. Tag is one of their favorites. Just in case you want to throw in some playing time, too. They show just how much they love to play them in Wolf Fever (Coming from Sourcebooks Casablanca) December 2010).

Now, the question: what are some of the rituals I do when I’m writing my wolf books?

First, you know like a musician must tune his instruments, a singer warms up her vocal chords, or a runner stretches before he runs, a werewolf author howls. Okay, maybe the werewolf author herself doesn’t howl, but she listens to howling on a CD. Or to rain pattering on a river, or the rush of a waterfall, or the sounds of birds chirping. Or Celtic music playing in the background while writing the Heart of the Highland Wolf.

And rereading sections, scenes, chapters of the book in progress is also something I do to get me into the mood of the scene. A cup of hot green tea is essential. And a box of tissues too. No, not for sobbing during emotional scenes, although they’re good for that also. But for allergies. Sniffle, sniffle. Did you know that canines can have allergies, too? You’ll learn more about this in Wolf Fever.

The Internet is an essential tool to have at hand also. I often stop editing a scene and do a quick search about weather, plants in an area, whether it has specific kinds of businesses or the architecture in that location. In Seduced by the Wolf, the layout of the zoo was important, especially with respect to the wolf pen. Just how do wolves get out of the pen if they need to? Very important.

Unlike the image of the happily pajama-dressed author, I’m often writing before work, during my lunch break, and after work, so am dressed and ready to go. Although the idea of lounging around in PJ’s to write certainly appeals! If that were the case, I’d be wearing a big pair of fluffy slippers, too.

What about candles? Only when I have a power outage. And yes, I’ve been known to write by candlelight then. It wasn’t all that long ago either, during a late spring storm and we didn’t have electricity for 18 hours. So I HAD to write! J In it’s in the blood. Maybe the genes. Definitely the psyche.

If it’s my day off, I take breaks to garden, and have a nice home-cooked meal, but eat right at my computer while I’m working on the story. Don’t want to miss anything. Which means sometimes my food gets cold while I’m writing. My tea often does.

Sometimes I have to get away from the computer and write by hand. This is more because I’m too easily distracted by emails. So if I just get away from the computer entirely, I’ll avoid that. Of course the problem then is, I don’t have my research tool at my fingertips, and I have to type up all my notes I wrote by hand. Still, I often find I get a lot written if I do it by hand.

And that’s it for the rituals. Oh, sometimes someone sends me a picture of a nice hunky wolfish kind of guy for inspiration, or pictures of beautiful wolves, which give me all kinds of ideas.

I write a daily blog for fans, that also gets my fingers in writing mode every morning before I add some more to my stories. And that really is it for my rituals.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today! I hope everyone will make it a ritual to read more wolfish kinds of books, and in the meantime, have a great day!  If you found a wolfish hunk to your liking, what would be a favorite ritual you’d share with him?
