BEA Spotlight: Books Read from 2012

So at the end of last year's BEA I had quite a few books!  I still have quite a few to read, but let's look at my STATS.

From Tuesday:
Total Books: 25
Read: 10
DNF'ed: 3
Traded: 4
Previously Read: 3
Books Left: 5
Favorite Book: TOUCH OF POWER by Maria V. Snyder, not terribly surprising since I love her books, but this departure from her previous fantasy world (starring Yelena and later Opal) hit its stride much earlier than the "Study" books did.
Least Favorite: RIFT by Andrea Cremer or VENOM by Fiona Paul, I expected quite a bit from Paul's book, but it ultimately let me down in execution.  Cremer I was giving a second chance since this was a prequel to the series I had issues with, but it too left me oddly dissatisfied.

From Wednesday:
Total Books: 27
Read: 9
DNF'ed: 6
Traded: 3
Previously Read: 5
Books Left: 4
Favorite BookTHRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Maas or REDSHIRTS by John Scalzi, both books were favorites of last year period.
Least FavoriteTHE CURSED by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which saddened me a lot because I loved her Luxe series SO MUCH.  I just could not like the main character.  Or her sister.  Or the love interest.

From Wednesday:
Total Books: 16
Read: 6
DNF'ed: 4
Traded:  1
Previously Read:  0
Books Left:  5
Favorite BookPRINCESS ELIZABETH'S SPY by Susan Elia MacNeal, this was a surprise entry to the list that was brought on by Nicole's campaigning for me to try it out!
Least Favorite:   THE POISON PRINCESS by Kresley Cole, less surprising since I'm not a fan of her non-YA books either.

So I didn't do that badly!  I've read almost half of the books, which is a better than in years past!  I plan on reading a couple more during the Readathon.

How did everyone else fare from last year?

#BEA13 Autographing Sneak Peek

By now everyone knows that BEA, in their infinite wisdom and new motto to be more open with readers, has released a preliminary Autographing Authors List (for the tables only, not the booths).  Its of course subject to change, but we won't let that deter us from gleeful happiness right? RIGHT.

Without further ado here's the authors I'm excited for (covers link to Goodreads).

The Look of LoveBella Andre The Look of Love - I have the ebook edition of most of the Sullivan Books, but like Kristan Higgins or Jill Shalvis, Bella Andre does contemporary romance in such a way that I enjoy it.  I'm looking forward to playing the comparison game between the self-pubbed ebook and traditionally pubbed print book.

FrigidJennifer L. Armentrout Frigid - I'm on the fence about JLA's contemporary non-YA books.  I enjoy her writing, but I'm so in love with Katy and Daemon its hard for me to love her other characters as much.

Antigoddess (Antigoddess, #1)Kendare Blake Antigoddess - I freely admit I haven't read Blake's other series (Anna Dressed in Blood), however this series is about mythology and if there is one thing that grabs me more than anything else its mythology.

Taken (Taken, #1)Erin Bowman Taken - The premise is interesting (hey at least its boys being secreted away instead of girls), but I'm kind of 'eh' about Bowman's writing so we'll see.

The School for Good and EvilSoman Chainani The School for Good and Evil - Looks rather interesting.  Middle Grade fantasy about a school where you can't fail your Fairy Tale.  I'm all over it.

The Wolf PrincessCathryn Constable The Wolf Princess - Someone somewhere picked up that 'fairy tale' is the key to getting me to want a book and this book (set in Russia!) is no exception.

InvisibilityAndrea Cremer and David Levithan Invisibility - Cremer, Levithan and myself have all had a rocky relationship with my enjoyment levels of their individual books.  However maybe the strengths they have will balance out the weaknesses of the other?

Queen Victoria's Book of Spells: An Anthology of Gaslamp FantasyEllen Datlow (Editor) Queen Victoria's Book of Spells - Ellen Datlow editing and Leanna Renee Hieber has a short story.  Sold.

Once Upon a Tower (Fairy Tales, #5)Eloisa James Once Upon a Tower - I've read all the other 'Fairy Tale' Romances James has produced and this one sounds just as delightful.

Tandem (Many-Worlds, #1)Anna Jarzab Tandem - Multiverse.  I'm down to get down with this theory of life.  I wonder if an alternate me is as interested?

These Broken Stars (These Broken Stars, #1)Annie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner These Broken Stars  - Scifi, ship wreck and secrets abound.  Admittedly the blurb doesn't grab me, but I followed the tour they recently had and the authors were so enthused I got excited.

Hero (Woodcutter Sisters #2)Alethea Kontis Hero - Aside from loving the first book (Enchanted), Kontis was so excitedable at NYCC about this book and the cover is so pretty!

The Lost PrinceEdward Lazellari The Lost Prince - Had my issues with book one (Awakenings), but I have hope that this will smooth out those issues.

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (The Rules of Scoundrels, #2)Sarah MacLean One Good Earl Deserves A Lover - I can NOT find my copy at all so this is fortuitous isn't it?  I love MacLean's writing and while this series hasn't been as strong as her 'By the Numbers' Romances, I'm still enjoying them greatly.

3:59Gretchen McNeil 3:59 - McNeil is hands down one of my favorite authors and one of the very few I trust to give me chills and a good mystery to boot.  So yes. I want.

Just Like FateCat Patrick and Suzanne Young Just Like Fate - Sounds just like the Gwyneth Paltrow movie "Sliding Doors", which I adore, or even the German movie "Run Lola Run".  I love the concept so much.

Across a Star-Swept Sea (For Darkness Shows the Stars, #2)Diana Peterfreund Across a Star Swept Sea - While I'm still playing catch up on her books, I do like her writing style and I am interested to see how things play out from "Among the Nameless Stars"

The Serpent's Shadow (Kane Chronicles, #3)Rick Riordan The Serpent's Shadow - Egyptian Mythology, I'm down for it.  The Kane Chronicles are my favorites of his series, so yes I am super excited.

The Wicked Wallflower (Wicked Wallflowers, #1)Maya Rodale The Wicked Wallflower - Rodale's new historical romance series and I enjoy her writing quite a bit.  Her characters are just different enough to keep me interested (though often times rather anachronistic).

The RithmatistBrandon Sanderson The Rithmatist - Sanderson, like Maas or Snyder, is an auto-buy author for me.  If I don't make it to one of his other tour stops, I will definitely be hitting this up.

ViciousVE Schwab Vicious  - An excerpt at Tor.com is what sealed the deal for me on this one, though I haven't been a fan of Schwab's YA efforts (The Near Witch and The Archived)

Rush (The Game, #1)Eve Silver Rush - I'll admit at first I was 'oh she's pulled through time and space, Doctor Who Gone Evil?' when I read the first line of the blurb.  Its actually rather like an episode from the 9th Doctor's Adventures so I'm rather interested still.

All Our YesterdaysCristin Terrill All Our Yesterdays - Future Self comes back to stop Past self from making a BIG TIME MISTAKE? Sign me up yesterday.

HAS NO COVER YET (links lead to Goodreads):

Alexandra Bracken Never Fade  - I haven't read The Darkest Minds yet, but I plan to soon and I fully expect to want this book given how much I enjoyed Bracken's other book Brightly Woven

Cinda Willians Chima The Enchanter Heir - I have read the other 'Heir' Chronicles books, so I'm interested to see where Chima takes this book.

Sarah J. Maas Crown of Midnight - I daresay no one in their right mind would think I'd turn this down considering my adoration of Sarah and her writing.  Just saying.

Maria V. Snyder Storm Watcher - This is a bit of a cheat really, Snyder was talking about this to me and my friend at a signing and thus I was really hopeful it would be at BEA.

BEA Authors 2013 (updated 3/3)

One of the best parts about Book Expo is that you get to meet a whole range of authors that you may not ordinarily get to meet.  Hundreds of authors from almost every genre are present--giving talks, signing books, or just hanging out in some cases.

I'm hoping to create a list here of the authors confirmed for Book Expo in 2013, not just the ones signing, but also any who may be hanging around the floor unaware of the rabid book lovers just waiting to pounce...I'll also list any author events, or links to at the very least, happening in NYC during that week as well.  I won't be listing the Author Breakfast authors, they're pretty easy to find out about.

And starting in March I'll have an Author Spotlight highlighting the authors, cause hey they're rockstars right?

I'll keep this updated as I find out new information!

Jennifer L. Armentrout (aka J.Lynn) - Frigid (confirmed signing)

BEA 2013: Registration is Live + about BEA Bloggers

Most of you probably know, but registration for Book Expo America 2013 is officially live!  The dates are May 30th - June 1st (May 29th is the Special Events day, for things such as BEA Bloggers).  Things a little different for Bloggers this year for registration however.

As many of us guessed last year BEA has split Book Bloggers away from the 'Press' category and put us firmly in the Non-Editorial Media category. A blog post from the Steven Rosato (the Show Director) over at The BEAN (the official blog of Steven Rosato for BEA related content) offers the following insights for Bloggers wishing to attend BEA ().

  • We made a number of mistakes with the blogger registration process in 2012.  The new process will be simplified, clear and transparent.
    • Bloggers will be able to register for BEA AND the conference for one low price.
    • Any bloggers wanting to attend just BEA and not the BBC will have a discounted special rate.
    • Bloggers wanting to register for a free media pass can do so, but will be subject to similar criteria as all working press*
Okay that's all well and good!  Unfortunately there's some glitches in the registration system which won't be fixed until January (at some point) if you want to register for both BEA Bloggers and BEA.  If you just want to register for BEA, then you're fine.  Register away, the cost is $104 for early bird rate (until May 15th).

I would however caution to say that it might be worth waiting to find out about BEA Bloggers a bit more.  The Blogger Advisory Board, put in effect to basically answer the issues voiced over 2012's conference being at best entertaining (but rarely useful) for bloggers, is packed with three Bloggers I admire greatly ():

BEA Bloggers Conference Advisory Board:
Seriously, look at that Board.  I'd trust them in a hot second.  not just because I fangirl over Jane and Pam is bloody awesome.  The rate for both your BEA and BEA Bloggers passes is $135 early bird rate.  Registration is not open for this yet, nor is very much known about the scheduling.  Its held on May 29th, the day before the Exhibit Hall opens.

Until is asking for an open call for papers.
Do you have thoughts on what would make an interesting topic, or who would be an engaging speaker, in next year's BEA Bloggers Conference Program? BEA Bloggers welcomes proposals for panel moderators, panel speakers and hour-long presentation topics relevant to book blogging community for its annual Conference Program Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Jacob Javits Convention Center in NYC.
So you can have a voice in the programming if you think you have something informative to say (I don't think I do, I'm better at analyzing information given to me then offering new information :shrugs: )

(*) So you can register for the Press Badge (which is free), but what they consider to be a qualifying Media resource is not stated (which is just smart business on their end, this way they can't be held to a sticking point).  Its a gamble and since Press registration isn't open yet I can't say what to expect.

I'll keep this page updated with information
